Introduction to knowledge organization: controlled vocabularies, ontologies

Annotation: Knowledge organisation is crucial for information processing, access and retrieval. The presentation will focus on practical knowledge organisation and management principles and methods. Basic tools such as controlled vocabularies, classifications, thesauri, ontologies and knowledge graphs will be introduced concerning their formal and substantive structure, functions and use. The different types of these semantic tools will also be presented using concrete examples of existing systems.

Benefits for the attendees: Participants should get an overall picture of the subject, be able to distinguish and describe the basic principles of knowledge organisation and be familiar with the basic types of semantic tools.

Josef Schwarz (*1974) has long been involved in the issues of information organization, substantive processing and document retrieval mainly from a methodological and practical point of view; in this area he participates in the implementation of projects, lectures and provides consultations. Currently, he works as a digital curator at the Centre for Information Technology of the Faculty of Arts of Masaryk University in the LINDAT/CLARIAH-CZ project.
