News from the Online Data Stewards Meeting

The Czech data stewards' community gathered online on February 4 to discuss important updates. Participants were introduced to the newly published "Beginner’s Guide for Data Stewards". They were also reminded about the ongoing data stewards campaign and the survey on the use of AI tools in practice.

The second part of the meeting focused on supporting the creation of Data Management Plans (DMPs) in Czech Science Foundation projects. Attendees shared their experiences, tips, and workflows, leading to the decision to launch a survey on the use of the DS/FAIRWizard tool. Additionally, this tool will be the focus of a workshop at the next in-person community meeting on April 7, 2025.

Data stewardship across Europe: practical experience, AI and community exchange in Prague

How is data stewardship evolving across Europe? Where can artificial intelligence already support research data management in practice, and why is it important to discuss “negative” research data? These were some of the questions explored at the sixth meeting of the Czech data steward community, held on 17 September at the National Library of Technology in Prague. Once again, the event combined practical experience, emerging topics and open community discussion.

“Poorly described data are like a book shelved in the wrong place. They practically don’t exist,” explains Petra Černohlávková.

A researcher may spend years collecting valuable data. But if those data remain on a personal drive without proper description, they effectively do not exist for anyone else. Metadata determine whether data can be found, understood and reused, and their importance is growing further with the rise of artificial intelligence. “For AI tools, well-structured and rich metadata are a gold mine,” says Petra Černohlávková, Head of the Repositories and Metadata Management Department at the National Library of Technology. In the interview, she explains why simply storing data is not enough, how the right repository can make a difference, and where AI can already reliably take over part of the work.

Zenodo Leads the Way, but Czech Researchers Use Dozens of Different Repositories for Their Data

Where do Czech researchers store their data, and at what stage of the research process are data most often deposited in repositories? The results collected so far from 193 respondents identified a total of 70 different repositories, databases and other storage solutions. Zenodo is the clear leader, while specialised databases used in molecular biology, genomics and proteomics are also strongly represented.
