Citizen science and the use of data collected by public participation in research

This course is held in the Czech language.

Annotation: The course aims to introduce the possibilities of using citizen science in data acquisition. Participants will learn the basic principles of citizen science, including the typology of citizen science projects. The possibilities of data collection, data processing, and publication will be discussed, with emphasis on the participatory research component.

Benefits for the attendees: Participants will understand the principles of citizen science and will be able to evaluate their project plans regarding the appropriateness of using citizen science tools. They will gain knowledge related to collecting, preserving and managing data generated by citizen scientists.

Jakub Trojan graduated from the Faculty of Science at Masaryk University and is now an assistant professor at the Institute of Geography, lecturing on citizen science in research. He has long been involved in citizen science at the Institute of Geonics of the CAS, where he leads projects to build a citizen science community in the Czech Republic. He is behind creating the Czech citizen science portal CitizenScience.cz and is active internationally, especially in the European Citizen Science Association. From 2022 to 2023, he worked as a citizen science expert at the Spatial Pattern Analysis & Research Lab at the University of California.
