Dear readers,

The Research Data Day & EOSC National Tripartite Event conference is fast approaching. And we’re dedicating this entire edition of our newsletter to it – we bring you not only an invitation to the event itself but also a preview of the topics that will be discussed, along with an interview with one of the keynote speakers. Jan Hrušák, Vice-Chair of the EOSC Steering Board and a member of the ESFRI, will open the conference together with Šárka Pospíšilová, Lucie Núñez Tayupanta, and Luděk Matyska. He will also lead the policy panel on Shaping the Future of EOSC: National Input and Commitment where he and other experts will discuss how the Czech Republic can help shape the European Open Science Cloud. As he says in our interview, “Thanks to EOSC, Czechia can help shape the future of science across Europe.”

You’ll find more about the conference programme and speakers, upcoming events, and the latest news from the world of research data in this issue.

We look forward to seeing you – both at the conference and in our next edition!

The EOSC CZ Team

Data is transforming science. Come and find out how.

Science relies on data – but who ensures that it is accessible, shared, protected, and usable across disciplines and states? Join leading European researchers, policymakers, and innovators in research data management at the Research Data Day 2025 & National Tripartite Event, taking place on 21–22 May in Brno.

You can look forward to lectures and discussions on the future of EOSC, the use of AI in science, data management, and the role of research infrastructures as cornerstones of open science.

Below, you can get to know some of the speakers in more detail and take a glimpse into the conference programme.

Shaping the Future of EOSC: National Input and Commitment

The policy block dedicated to the future of EOSC at both the national and European levels will be chaired by Jan Hrušák, who is Vice-Chair of the EOSC Steering Board and a member of the ESFRI Executive Board, contributing to shaping research infrastructure and open science policy in Europe. He will be joined by Kamran Naim, Director for Strategy and Operations at the EOSC Association. Other speakers will include Luděk Matyska, member of the EOSC Steering Committee and Professor at Masaryk University, as well as Matej Antol, Principal Project Manager of IPs EOSC-CZ and Executive Director of CERIT-SC. The panel will also feature Ladislav Krištoufek, Vice-Rector for Research at Charles University, Lucie Núñez Tayupanta, Director of the Department of Research and Development MEYS, and Yannis Rodopoulos, Policy Officer for Open Science and Research Infrastructures at European Commission. Together, they will provide a comprehensive perspective on the direction of EOSC in both European and national contexts.

Research Infrastructures as Pillars of the EOSC Federation

Parik Čechvala – Multimessenger Experiments and Their Role in the Exploration of the Universe

Patrik Čechvala works at the Institute of Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences, where he focuses on astroparticle physics. His research involves simulations and data analysis from ultra-high-energy cosmic ray experiments and Cherenkov telescopes. He is involved in the international programme Physics for Future. In his lecture, he will discuss the role of multi-messenger experiments in exploring the universe.

This session will be complemented by contributions from Yana Leontiyeva (Czech Social Science Data Archive) with the lecture From a Small Data Archive to a National Service Provider of Sustainable Data Services for Social Sciences in Europe: 25 Years of CSDA in the Context of CESSDA and EOSC, and Stefan Voigt (Open Search Foundation), presenting on Towards an Open and Federated European Web Data Infrastructure for Search, Analytics and AI: How Europe Can Regain Sovereignty in the Web.

Flash Talks: Research Infrastructures in EOSC: Enabling Data-Driven Science Across Disciplines

The flash talk session will feature presentations by Ilona Trtíková (Czech Social Science Data Archive), Petr Baldrian (Institute of Archaeology of the CAS), Marek Cebecauer (J. Heyrovský Institute of Physical Chemistry of the CAS), Jaromír Kovárník (USB), Michal Kozubek (MUNI) and David Novák (Institute of Archaeology of the CAS).

The Future Research Landscape: Transforming Science with Data and AI

Vladimír Petrík – ELLIOT: European Large Open Multimodal Foundation Models for Scalable Robust Generalisation

Vladimír Petrík is a researcher at the Czech Institute of Informatics, Robotics and Cybernetics at CTU in Prague. He is a co-investigator in the European projects AGIMUS, euROBIN, and ELLIOT. In his lecture, he will present the ELLIOT project, which aims to develop European open multimodal foundation models for robust and scalable AI — including applications in robotics, Earth modelling, and mobility.

Thanks to EOSC, Czechia can help shape the future of science across Europe

Czechia not only holds a strong representation within the governing structures of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC), but thanks to an advanced national strategy and the extensive EOSC-CZ project, it is becoming a visible and active player on the European stage. We spoke with Jan Hrušák, moderator of the policy panel at the Research Data Day & NTE conference, also about which countries can serve as inspiration for the implementation of EOSC and the role of the Czech Republic in building the EOSC Federation in Europe.

Interview

Find a buddy: It's easier together

In the sixth and final episode of Data Guardians: Mission FAIR series, we focus on the power of the data steward community. We share tips on where to meet colleagues in the field, how to make use of the online Discord platform, and why face-to-face meetings still hold great significance. We also share feedback from participants, who confirm that support and the sharing of experiences are crucial for this role. Join us, get inspired, and be part of a vibrant network of people driving research data management forward.

#6 Find other data superheros
Let us know what you thought of the Mission FAIR series

How do Czech scientists manage and share their research data?

What support do they need? The answers will be provided by an exploring the state of research data management in the scientific environment that has just launched as part of the National Repository Platform for Research Data project, under the EOSC CZ initiative, in collaboration with the Sociological Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences. The aim is to understand the needs of researchers and to better tailor the services of EOSC CZ to align with the realities of scientific practice. The results will also assist the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports in evaluating the impact of EOSC implementation in the Czech Republic.

The pilot call for Mini-Projects has successfully launched the involvement of the scientific community in building the NDI

Mini-Projects are low-threshold projects with a budget of up to CZK 4.5 million, created within the Open Science II project to engage the broader scientific community in developing the National Data Infrastructure (NDI). The pilot call took place in spring 2025 and tested the process setup; additional calls are planned for autumn 2025 and winter 2025/2026. Each application is reviewed by the relevant working group of EOSC CZ, which assesses whether the planned outputs align with the goals of the Open Science II project and the needs of the data-driven research environment.
